ARO43: Nether Park Quarry, Aberdeenshire: a small Mesolithic and Neolithic site on the banks of the River Dee

By Hilary K Murray and J Charles Murray

with specialist reports by Torben Bjarke Ballin, Derek Hamilton and Scott Timpany
Lithic artefact illustrations by Jan Dunbar

Mesolithic features associated with lithics, including knapping areas, were identified during an evaluation. Sporadic Neolithic use of the site was identified by hearths, a knapping area and post-pits interpreted as an ephemeral structure. The latter is earlier than the nearby timber halls at Warren Field and Balbridie, but other activity could be contemporary with them.

Key words: Mesolithic, early Neolithic, knapping sites, hearths, post-pit structure, timber halls.
