The environmental and material cultural evidence of number of pits and postholes on a raised beach terrace of the River Ayr, on the site of the new Ayr Academy, indicated possible seasonal of use of the site during prehistory. The site was used from the late Mesolithic to the late Bronze Age with one group of features probably representing a late early Bronze Age burial ground of the 16-17th centuries BC.
