Pictish Painted pebbles are a conundrum. These decorated, white beach-worn quartz pebbles dating to the first millennium AD, have been the subject of much thought and discourse since the nineteenth century. This report outlines the results of recent experimental archaeology undertaken in Shetland that provides new insight into the methods used in decorating these enigmatic objects.
